On something like ash that won’t completely fill the grain but it will give a slightly smoother surface. For an oil type finish it just apply the oil in the control cavity the same way as the rest of the body.

As far as cleaning up the tru oil, if the tarnished area isnt too bad, you can hit it (lightly) with some 0000 steel wool, and apply either some orange oil, or another light coat of true oil. If you don't fill it, you'll be left with a fairly rough grain that'll collect body oil, dead skin cells, dirt, and various other grunge and eventually look like hell.
